the Village

The Workers Cottage is situated on a quiet lane in a pretty Norfolk village.

While you’ll enjoy a peaceful rural setting, the village of Great Bircham has an excellent café/deli with a general store, a play park, a working windmill, and some of the best places to eat nearby. So although you have all the charm of a countryside holiday cottage, you also have plenty close at hand should you fancy a relaxed weekend with minimal exploring.

Take a morning stroll to pick up your newspaper and breakfast, and if you’d like to leave the car at home, a local evening drink or dinner is also within easy reach.

Norfolk offers the perfect blend for a holiday for all – whether you’re visiting as a couple, with children, or as a group of friends. From wide sandy beaches and beautiful countryside to historic houses, wildlife parks, and fantastic food spots, there’s something here for everyone to enjoy, at any pace.

In the village, Bircham Windmill (open during the summer months) is a lovely spot for afternoon tea and freshly baked bread. Houghton Hall, with its beautiful walled garden and regularly changing art installations, is just a 5-minute drive away.

Our nearest beach, Brancaster, is only 15 minutes by car. Wells-next-the-Sea is also gorgeous, with its colourful beach huts and sweeping sandy beach.

Other fantastic days out nearby include Snettisham Park Farm, Bewilderwood, Pensthorpe, Holkham Hall, the SEA LIFE Centre in Hunstanton, Farmer Freds soft play, Watatunga Wildlife Reserve, and a visit to Stiffkey Stores for local produce and treats. Nearby Burnham Market for stroll around the village green and dip into stylish homeware shops, gift boutiques, and local food stores. Drove Orchards (near Thornham) is a great spot for food lovers and families alike. It’s home to a lovely mix of independent shops, a farm shop, deli, wine shops, bakery, and a handful of places to eat, making it perfect for a relaxed lunch or a browse. There’s often something tasty to take back to the cottage too – from local produce and artisan bread to sweet treats and gifts.

getting here

We may feel wonderfully rural (but not isolated), yet we’re surprisingly easy to reach from London – around a 2-hour drive, or under 2 hours by train from King’s Cross to King’s Lynn.

Taxis are readily available outside the station for the 20-minute journey, and we can provide a list of trusted local firms that can be pre-booked for your stay.
